Orfeus í undirheimum

Erkitíð Electronic Music Festival held a composition competition in November 2022, in which “Orfeus í undirheimum” won.

The brief was to make a electronic composition inspired by Icelandic composer, Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, and the piece chosen for inspiration was “Euridice”, which is based on the story of Orpheus and Euridice.

Likewise, “Orfeus í undirheimum” tells the story of when Orpheus ventured into the underworld in hope of bringing his wife, Euridice, back to life by playing his most beautiful music to Hades. Hades agrees to return Euridice, with the condition that Orpheus walks back to the land of living without looking back, trusting that Euridice is following him. When Orpheus had almost left the underworld he began to distrust Hades and looked back, only to see Euridice disappear back to the underworld.
